Religion
Buddhism had already spread to China during the Han dynasty and it thrived during the Jin Dynasty. The new religion of Buddhism was able to supply a more abstract religion unlike old-fashioned confucianism. One very famous Buddhist monk named Huiyuan taught about meditation to reach enlightenment. These teachings of Buddhism were recorded in writings named the Nirvana Sutra. The emperors and nobles of the Eastern Jin dynasty went as far as protecting monasteries (places where monks live, worship, and study.) and sponsoring them too. Another religion worshipped during the Jin dynasty was the Daoists. These Daoists didn’t live quiet and unpolitical life in Northern China. The Daoists also believed that the Buddha was just a reincarnation of Laozi. Laozi was a philosopher and poet who founded Taoism. Meanwhile all the Buddhists believed that Laozi was a disciple of Buddha.
